The Celtic Chariot

The Celtic Chariot

During a seminar hosted by the Boyne Currach Heritage Group a talk was given under the heading currachs past, currachs future.

It was agreed that although large inroads had been made by way of documentation and preservation of the craft, we had only touched the tip of the iceberg when it came to understanding the real meaning of the term currach from the past. And only through annual experimental attempts, could we attempt to complete a jigsaw that would help better represent our Celtic past.

The Celtic currach is a concept born out of a welcome visit to the races in Albany, New York, on seeing such huge strides made to tweak every component of the currach in order to win the championship. The Celtic currach is an ornate gesture to the Irish diaspora in America. ‘Unable to compete in the event neither physically nor technically, I feel that I have truly contributed artistically.’ (Claidhbh Ó Gibne)
